If you’re a true enthusiast of popping and have done your homework, you’re likely aware that this vibrant dance style, also known as Poplockin, originated in California during the late 1960s and early 1970s, created by young people of color still in middle school. I’ve had the privilege of traveling to California and speaking with the original pioneers of the dance. The iconic brim hats and white gloves were unmistakable symbols of a true popper. Wearing these items not only identified you as a dancer but also earned you respect and protection from the gangsters who ruled the streets and neighborhoods of California. This is my heartfelt homage to that rich history and to the OGs and pioneers who paved the way for dancers like me.
